Bird & Nature Club
by Tom Quink, President and Program Chairman
The La Casa Bird & Nature Club will meet on Monday, February 26th at 7:30 p.m. in the Rec. Hall.
Our guest speaker is Rick Greenspun who will present a power-point program on “The Reddish Egret and the Feather Wars”. His talk focuses on the plume trade and the devastation of millions of birds, particularly wading birds. The visuals include many vintage photos of how birds were used in the high-fashion business in the past. Rick will talk about area birds and the challenges they face in the future, including the recovery of the reddish egret and impediments facing its long-term survival.
Greenspun served for twelve years with the Sarasota Audubon Society. For sixteen years, he has owned and operated Sarasota Birding Guides, leading more than forty bird-watching tours to Africa, Asia, Latin and South America and Canada.
All La Casa residents, including renters and guests are invited to our meetings and programs. A $1.00 per person voluntary donation is requested at the door to help pay the honoraria of professional speakers and to support the work of local wildlife centers and conservation organizations. Please join us on February 26th and bring friends and neighbors to view this enlightening presentation about mistakes made in the past and how to rectify these now and in the future.
A free social of coffee, tea and home-made cookies will follow the meeting.
