Bird & Nature Club
The La Casa Bird & Nature Club will meet on Monday, March 25th at 7:30 p.m. in the Rec. Hall.
Prior to a short meeting, Dr. Robin Jenkins, Director of Veterinary Services for the Peace River Wildlife Center (PRWC) will be our featured speaker. “Living in Harmony with Nature” will be the focus of her presentation. She will be bringing “LUNA”, everyone’s favorite PRWC spokes-owl. He is a leucistic (albino) eastern screech owl, one of the center’s glove-trained education birds. Dr. Robin will talk on what PRWC does: rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured orphaned and ill Florida native wildlife. She will discuss what happens to wildlife as humans encroach on their habitats and what we can all do to avoid hurting the animals. She will try to alleviate some common fears about wildlife encounters for the “newbies”, and help explore volunteer opportunities for those interested parties.
Peace River Wildlife Center is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to the care, preservation and protection of Charlotte County’s native wildlife since 1978. The center has a wildlife veterinarian on staff, Dr. Robin Jenkins who earned her DVM degree from the University of Florida in 1996. PRWC is open seven days a week year-round, including holidays. Tours are offered from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It receives no government funding, relies entirely on private donations, and is a non-profit organization. A basket will be passed to SOLICIT INDIVIDUAL DONATIONS. PRWC works cooperatively with the Wildlife Center of Venice in the rescue and rehabilitation of wild birds and mammals. Both are involved with rescue and rehab of injured birds and mammals in La Casa.
Everyone – residents and guests – living in La Casa is invited to meet Dr. Robin and this unusual owl and learn how it is used in PRWC’s educational programs. We request a voluntary donation of $1.00 per person at the door. The money is used to pay professional speakers and support the work of local wildlife refuges like the one at Peace River. Please bring a friend and enjoy an educational evening followed by a pleasant social of coffee, tea and home-made cookies. If you need a ride to and from our meeting, please contact one of the Club’s officers or staff.
