BIRD and NATURE CLUB (note corrected date of February field trip)
by Tom Quink, President and Program Chairman
The La Casa Bird and Nature Club will feature BBC’s The Blue Planet: Seas of Life series by viewing “TIDAL SEAS” at its meeting on Monday, November 24th at 7:30 p.m. in the Rec. Hall.
During the business meeting we’ll discuss the termination of the Club’s photo contest and inform you of the field trip scheduled for February 3, 2015. Following the meeting, we’ll view the spectacular video on the planet’s Tidal Seas.
The sun and moon move billions of tons of water around the world with every turn of the tide. The strongest tides empty entire bays, smash trees on riverbanks, and strand sea-creatures on suddenly dry land. Weaker tides control the huge numbers of fish, coaxing schools of giant stingrays through astounding underwater arches. As the water recedes, the tide can create unbelievable landscapes like a sparkling world of salt crystals inhabited by tiny shrimp and bright pink flamingos. We’ll observe the world’s largest tides in the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia and learn the reason why it is a rich feeding ground for a myriad of sea animals. The video focuses on how these creatures have adapted to a pulsing ecosystem … tides.
All La Casa residents, renters and guests are invited to this meeting to enjoy this beautiful video, a part of the series that won multiple Emmy and BAFTA TV awards for its music and cinematography. A $1.00 per person voluntary donation is requested at the door. Proceeds pay professional speakers and support the work of local wildlife refuges. So please come, bring friends and neighbors and enjoy this superb video followed by a social of coffee, tea and home-made cookies.
PHOTO CONTEST TERMINATED – For the past several years the Bird and Nature Club sponsored an annual photo contest. The past two years have shown a waning interest in the contest…only a few persons have entered photos. Undoubtedly, this is because of the grand and very successful photo contest sponsored by the Casa Photo Club in March. We thank all who supported our contest and encourage them to enter their photographs in the Photo Club’s contest. There are a number of categories that fall under the topic of Nature: Flowers, Birds, Animals, Fish …and a “Scenic” category which includes nature scenes. Also, we thank all of the judges that gave freely of their time and efforts to our Club’s contest.
