La Casa International Writers’ Club – Feb. 2015

February 5, 2015 by Tim Davis

The La Casa International Writers’ Club may need outside assistance in determining whether we should use the spelling of the club name as it just was shown or whether we should move the apostrophe between the last two letters in “Writers” (written here sans that punctuation.

Our little club does not seem to have a universally accepted name and, to date, there have been no complaints, entirely because there has been no discussion about the actual name. Substance trumps spelling and branding of our product.

We’ve been off to a nice start of the winter in the South. We have three Canadians from two provinces and somewhat more members hailing from states that represent the East Coast, Mid West, and the Pacific Coast. Some members are working, or starting to work, on family-interest memoirs/stories while others are tending toward fictional stories. Some, to date, are mulling the idea of what to write and how to begin.

Some mentioned words related to how text becomes a book when published include gutters, orphans and widows, headers, pagination, and copyright. Literary agents, self-addressed-stamped envelopes have had a mention as well. Does all this seem exciting?

There are no restrictions on our membership number, but our group of about a dozen seems to work well. We invite queries about what we do and how someone can become connected with this group. Hey, any ideas as to how to spell the name of our club?

International Writers’ Club Newsletter Summer 2014

September 15, 2014 by Tim Davis

Late summer or thereabouts, 2014

By the time that this Writers Club post is made all members will have left the 34287 postal zone and will have arrived at other places that they now call home. While at La Casa, I would bet, we all called where we slept “home”. An old expression that we know is, “there’s no place like home.” It is likely that one Dorothy, of Kansas, first voiced those words, but without further research it is not known where the expression came from.

We, the writers, agreed that the winter of 2013-14 was a fine time to be in Florida. This was one heck of a good winter to be away from our other homes. As the season to remain waned one of our newer members bought a home in our community and another member sold a home here. Both of these writers are from Ontario, so La Casa gained one provincial homeowner while we, with regrets, lost another. With the small number of members in our club this is statistically relevant.

We are represented by two members from New York, one from way across the country: Washington, one Connecticut Yankee (also from Cape Cod), and another, a resident of Ontario. We have an Ohio resident who represents the entire Mid West territory. Some of our members bring to the table their European heritages that predate residences in North America. We like to think of ourselves as an international club.

The two founders of the club are published novelists. Details are available, of course. Most of the residents who showed an interest in writing were interested in what we should call memoirs. They wanted to record life experiences so that their families might learn more about their often unheard of heritages. There were times when readers laughed at what they had written and there were other times when a tear or two slowed the readings. All in all, the writers were glad that they had started to write, often a procrastinated chore.

When this year’s autumnal chill reminds La Casa residents that migration to 34287 is approaching, some may also have an inspiration to explore membership in the park’s writers group. Membership applications may be provided on this website that hosts numerous clubs’ posts. All we need to get these forms available is one of our member’s willingness to write it up and send it in. We may find that we have several application forms sent in with each having some novel (pun intended) approach to what information will be needed for consideration for membership. Body mass ratios and notarized attestations of recent flu shots will not be asked for. Hey, we would like to be easy to join but difficult to leave. Keep watching for monthly additions to our program.
