When a hurricane warning is issued, the first areas evacuated are low-lying areas and mobile homes. People in mobile home parks are expected to leave and go to a pre-arranged safe place or an evacuation center. La Casa’s Rec Hall and Club House are NOT safe evacuation centers.
Sarasota County opens designated buildings and will announce them on local news stations. Once a notice of mandatory evacuation is given, our security gates are opened and security personnel also evacuate. The Sarasota Sheriff Department becomes our site security.
If you choose to stay in your home during a hurricane –
- You will hear a Sheriff’s car driving through La Casa, announcing a mandatory evacuation.
- Once winds reach 40 mph, all Police and Emergency services are pulled off the streets.
- Until the storm passes, there will be no one who can assist you if you are at risk from high winds or storm surges/flooding. You are on your own.
- When the storm has passed, emergency services will be very busy, and may not be able to reach you quickly due to high water, debris or simply lack of personnel.
So, if a hurricane warning is issued, PLEASE do the smart thing and leave to a secure location or evacuation center. Develop an emergency plan NOW, and have the items you need ready for a prompt evacuation if it is ordered.
Don’t risk your life for your home or property – it can be replaced. You can’t.
