We are fortunate to live in a fine community, with a wide range of amenities to suit many tastes. We also have a large number of snowbirds, resulting in vacant homes in the summer months.
Unfortunately, local thieves also know we have a large number of vacant homes, and target residential communities like ours.
Another unfortunate fact is many residents here feel they don’t need to lock up their homes or property. The thieves also know this.
Randy Browning reported this week that a resident’s truck was stolen from La Casa last week. Was the vehicle secured? No, it was sitting unlocked with the keys in the ignition. We have had bicycles and other property stolen on multiple occasions. We have also had the occasional home entry, fortunately in vacant homes.
Despite our reluctance to believe thieves will target our beautiful community, the reality is different. They are looking for unsecured homes and possessions.
Let’s not be victims, and more important, don’t be complacent.
- Lock your home when you are not there.
- Use exterior lighting to remove dark or shadowy areas around your home.
- Limit landscaping around the home, and keep it trimmed short to remove hiding places.
- Don’t leave your vehicles unlocked at any time. Most important, don’t leave the keys in the vehicle.
- Don’t leave bicycles or other valuable property outside and unsecured.
People might say all of this is “common sense”. Well, if it was common, everyone would already be doing it. Residents, let’s not give the thieves any reason to come into La Casa — lock up your property.
